The Bar do Mineiro is the most famous and traditional Meeting Point in Santa Tereza. Intellectuals meet residents, tourists meet Cariocas, Brazilians meet with people from countries all over the world. Diogenes, the owner of the bar, is an art collectioneer and is always available for a small talk. Lastly, the Bar do Mineiro also became famous for the CD launched, called "Bar do Mineiro Santa Teresa Rio de Janeiro" - it is a authentic and very interesting collection of MPB Music from Rio.
MPB means "Música Popular Brasileira", that is traditional Samba and Bossa Nova Music. On the CD you will find songs of Chico Buarque, Jorge Ben Jor, Teresa Cristina, Elza Soares and more.
Diogenes' Bar do Mineiro is also recommended for it's authentic Brazilian food - dishes are served for lunch and for dinner. The Bar is called after the inland state of Minas Gerais, which is considered as a culinary capital of sorts in Brazil. Meals are hearty and portions generous. Appetizers include sausages and pasteis - savory pastries with a variety of stuffings, including sausage, cheese, or cabbage. The frango com quiabo (stewed chicken with okra) is popular, as is the Feijão tropeiro - much thicker than the feijoada, this bean dish is made with brown instead of black beans.
The restaurant stands out also for it's huge collection of Cachaças and so called "infusions": fruit and spices are soaked in the fiery cane
alcohol, adding flavor and color to the booze. You may have a Caipirinha here - made with lemons and cachaça (the sugar-cane liquor).
