Breakfast with milk coffee and tropical fruits is taken on the large garden terrace, when the first golden sunrays are breaking through the leaves of the Flamboyant trees - little monkeys are playing around up in these beautiful trees with their red brilliant flowers. Your host, Cornelius Rohr has transformed the historic mansion into a veritable, small Hotel de Charme - as a talented carpenter, he designed the furniture and the interior design. Casa Aurea is a great retreat from the heavily populated tourist areas. It sits upon the hills of Santa Teresa where the winding cobblestone streets and an old-fashion tram gives the neighbourhood a historical charm. You may go up by the historic tram, called "Bonde", an enchanting experience. On the near by streets of the Casa are a few small grocery stores, restaurants and other various stores I didn't get a chance to venture into.
At a quick glance, the casa has 13 rooms with a variety of
accommodations ranging from dormitory style to private rooms with
washrooms. There are plenty of communal areas which add sociability to
the place. As well there is a guest kitchen to incase you want to dine
in.

Getting here with the Bonde Santa Teresa |
 To get here is easy: you take the little streetcar from
Largo do Carioca in the City Center - and the streetcar became a legend
of its own, it is the last surviving streetcar in Rio, dating from
1890. The Cariocas, the inhabitants of Rio, call this historic relict
respectfully "Bonde" - named after Mr. Bond (no not
Mr. 007...), who brought the electric tramway to Rio.

 Santa Teresa, our pittoresque neighborhood has become a touristic spot of Rio de Janeiro
in the last years, it is one of the few places in Rio where the old
colonial style architecture still is preserved, a green district where,
in ancient times, the rich had their huge mansions surrounded by
generous gardens. Santa Teresa is located on a little hillside
overlooking downtown and the Guanabara Bay.
